Previous years Symposiums
In both 2015 and 2016, EMBL Australia provided 10 travel grants for Australian students to attend the annual symposium in Germany. The last two symposiums attended were:
- The 18 th EMBL PhD Symposium (17-19 November 2016) with the theme ‘Life by Numb3rs: Towards Quantitative Biology’
- The 17th EMBL PhD Symposium (22-24 October 2015) with the theme ‘Just by chance? Randomness and Variability Shaping Biology'
About the symposium
The Symposium is an annual event, organised by first-year PhD students at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany. It brings together fellow students from around the world, for a 3-day series of talks by leading experts but also by students themselves. Networking opportunities, poster sessions and workshops are also included in the programme.
Who was eligible to receive the grants?
The grants were available to students currently enrolled at an Australian University undertaking a PhD that had not yet submitted a thesis. Students in almost any field of biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, informatics, engineering and molecular medicine were eligible to apply. Applications were reviewed and ranked solely on the basis of qualification and scientific potential by the EMBL Australia Travel Grant selection committee.
What have past students said that have attended the symposium?
"The symposium was organised in an open and friendly environment that encouraged me to discuss my work freely with professors and guest speakers."
"The quality of the research presented was outstanding, providing exposure to a number of currently unpublished and potentially useful approaches, techniques and perspectives. Since returning these insights have already had direct impacts on my on-going PhD research."
"I have returned to Australia armed with new knowledge, ideas and a feeling of inspiration!"
